2019 IDCF DevOps Case Study Series: Insights from Facebook, Microsoft, Etsy and More

In 2019, IDCF held three intensive DevOps case‑study sessions with nearly one hundred participants, researching and interpreting the DevOps, agile, and engineering cultures of leading companies worldwide, including Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Netflix, Etsy, Capital One, Huawei, ByteDance, Ping An, Ctrip, and NetEase.

Facebook's Hacker Culture – Facebook promotes a hacker mindset through three core principles: letting employees work on what interests them, open information sharing, and trusting staff. New hires spend the first six weeks in a Bootcamp, selecting tasks from a pool and later choosing a team that matches their interests.

Microsoft's Engineering Practices – When developing Windows in 2002, Microsoft employed advanced practices still relevant today: daily automated builds for the latest code, extensive automated testing for virtually all code, and a mature branching strategy with continuous integration (CI) that triggers builds and Build Verification Tests (BVT) on every commit.

Etsy's Technical Transformation – Etsy’s journey is described in five steps: introducing DevOps culture, improving site stability, building a continuous‑deployment pipeline, deprecating Sprouter, and implementing database sharding for scalability. Each step offers practical insights for other organizations.

The overall research process, termed “reverse‑engineering growth,” involved small‑group collaborations where each team claimed a company, conducted research, and produced a PPT presentation summarizing key highlights to be applied to participants’ own work.

All three 2019 DevOps case‑study videos have been compiled into a publicly available collection, encouraging more practitioners to use top‑industry practices as an external brain for continuous knowledge building.
