2023 Tech Hiring Survey Highlights: Skills, Roles, and Market Trends

CodinGame and CoderPad released the 2023 Tech Hiring Survey, analyzing responses from 14,000 professionals to uncover trends affecting recruiters and job seekers in the technology sector.

59% of developers do not hold a computer‑science university degree, and nearly one‑third are self‑taught.

The majority of technical teams operate in a hybrid remote/on‑site model; only 15% of developers work 100% on‑site.

Despite widespread layoff news, developers feel secure: 33% feel more secure, while 41% notice no major change.

One in two developers is considering a job change within the next year.

Programming language demand remains strong for JavaScript, Java, and Python, with consistent supply‑demand alignment. Demand for TypeScript, Swift, Scala, Kotlin, and Go exceeds supply.

Framework popularity shows Node.js, React, and .NET Core as the most recognized and sought‑after, while Angular faces a shortage and declining popularity (from 17% awareness in 2021 to 12.3% in 2023).

Developers’ top three learning interests in 2023 are web development, AI/ML, and game development. Recruiters’ top three hiring priorities are web development, DevOps, and database software development. Interest in AI/ML among developers slightly decreased from 30% in 2022 to 24% in 2023.

The most needed roles for recruiters in 2023 are:

Backend developers (55.04%)

Full‑stack developers (54.33%)

Application developers (45.12%)

Full‑stack and backend developers are also the hardest positions to fill due to talent shortages.

DevOps engineers remain in demand but fell from the 3rd to the 5th most popular role; however, DevOps as a skill set remains highly valued, second only to web development, reflecting growing maturity in adopting DevOps and SRE practices.

Key conclusions of the report:

Computer‑science degrees are no longer the norm; companies should rely on skill‑based assessments and coding interviews to evaluate talent.

Technical hiring remains competitive, with salary being the primary motivator for developers considering a move.

Developers should acquire backend and full‑stack experience to improve job prospects, as these roles have the highest demand.

Both enterprises and developers are increasingly embracing freelance work, a trend worth monitoring.
