As the recommendation business of the LeiHuo UX data team expands, the need for rapid integration and agile iteration becomes critical, exposing the shortcomings of traditional recommendation system workflows such as lengthy data integration, module coupling, long development cycles, and cumbersome model management.

MindsDB, an open‑source machine‑learning library built on SQL, addresses these issues by allowing users to connect to mainstream data stores (e.g., ClickHouse, MySQL), manage data sources centrally, and train and deploy models directly through simple SQL statements.

Key advantages highlighted include unified data source management, SQL‑driven model training, built‑in model version control, and an API for online inference, which together eliminate the need for separate feature engineering pipelines and inference services.

In practice, the team leveraged MindsDB to unify data sources across more than 100 products, reduce data movement, perform feature processing and offline training on the same platform, and obtain predictions via SQL queries, thereby cutting development effort and time.

The SQL‑centric workflow also streamlined model version management, providing clear metrics such as training time and accuracy for each version, improving governance and reliability of model assets.

Results of the adoption show a roughly 30% reduction in offline and real‑time feature handling tasks, a decrease of the recommendation development cycle to about 2.5 person‑days, and faster, more reliable model version iteration.
