AI Spam Callers Meet AI Answering Bots: A Closed Loop of Machine Calls

A personal anecdote reveals how AI-powered spam calls and AI call-screening assistants create a closed loop where machines talk to machines, highlighting the erosion of trust in phone communication and the irony of using AI to solve problems created by AI.

AI Spam Callers Meet AI Answering Bots: A Closed Loop of Machine Calls

AI-to-AI Phone Call Anecdote

At lunch, a friend received a call from an unknown number. Instead of answering, he activated his phone's AI assistant to handle it. The caller was an AI sales bot pitching a product. The AI assistant responded calmly, asking the purpose and following up based on the bot's answers. The two AIs conversed without human involvement, forming a complete closed loop. The friend placed the phone on the table; the humans continued eating. After the meal, the phone showed a generated transcript of the conversation, but no one cared about the outcome.

Root Cause: Decline of Trust in Phone Communication

In the early mobile era, a ringing phone signaled a friend or family member with urgent news. Today, an unknown number is assumed to be a sales pitch or scam, prompting immediate rejection. People do not dislike the phone itself; they dislike relentless, impersonal interruptions from strangers who disregard the recipient's needs.

Arms Race: AI Creates and Blocks Spam

Spam generation: Previously, telemarketing required humans to dial and speak, with high rejection rates. Now AI auto-dials thousands of numbers using scripted dialogues at minimal cost, dramatically increasing spam volume.

Spam blocking: Defensive tools like AI call screening emerge. One side uses AI to create nuisance; the other uses AI to block it. Machines generate problems; machines solve problems; humans merely seek quiet.

The author compares this to someone constantly throwing trash into a room while another person buys more robot vacuums. Even with effective vacuums, the room stays dirty if trash throwers multiply. Currently, the "trash throwers" — AI-driven spam operations — are growing rapidly.

Future Outlook and Flip Side

AI-to-AI dialogues will become more common, handling many tasks and reducing human burden. This is beneficial. However, when humans genuinely need to solve a problem by phone, the other end may also be an AI. People then find themselves repeatedly demanding "Transfer to a human!" AI is a tool designed to reduce hassle, but in telephony, few people have the patience to converse with an AI.
