Alibaba Cloud’s IPv6 Deployment: Achievements, Importance, and Future Outlook

The letter expresses gratitude for the past year’s support and looks forward to continued cooperation to promote high‑quality development of the information and communications industry and strengthen the nation’s network infrastructure.

Four years ago Alibaba initiated a massive IPv6 transformation; today its e‑commerce, video, and mapping platforms fully support IPv6, and all core Alibaba Cloud products offer IPv6, making it the first domestic cloud provider to do so. Mobile‑Internet IPv6 traffic now exceeds 76%, benefiting over 600 million users.

IPv6 is crucial because IPv4’s 32‑bit address space (about 4.3 billion addresses) is exhausted, leading to security and scalability challenges, whereas IPv6’s 128‑bit space provides virtually unlimited addresses and advantages in security, mobility, and quality of service.

Deploying IPv6 at Alibaba’s massive scale is a high‑difficulty, high‑investment, high‑risk engineering effort, as noted by industry experts. In just three years, IPv6 user numbers and traffic grew nearly a thousand‑fold without compromising user experience or application security.

Through close cooperation with carriers, Alibaba performed multiple rounds of network quality optimization, addressing connection failures, latency, and MTU issues to ensure smoother application performance.

Five of Alibaba’s IPv6 transformation cases have been selected as outstanding examples among 100 nationwide projects by the Central Cyberspace Administration and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Beyond providing a unique address for every grain of sand, IPv6 enables smart endpoints such as fire hydrants and streetlights, accelerating the transition to a digital economy.
