Anthropic Appoints Former Stripe Exec Rahul Patil as CTO Amid AI Infrastructure Race

Anthropic recently appointed Rahul Patil, a former senior technology leader at Stripe, as its new Chief Technology Officer, succeeding co‑founder Sam McCandlish, who will become chief architect.

As part of this leadership change, Anthropic is reorganizing its core engineering teams to bring product engineering closer to infrastructure and inference groups.

In his new role, Patil will oversee computing, infrastructure, inference, and other engineering tasks, while McCandlish will focus on pre‑training and large‑scale model training.

Both Patil and McCandlish will report to Anthropic President Daniela Amodei.

The company now faces fierce infrastructure competition from AI labs such as OpenAI and Meta, which have each invested tens of billions of dollars in compute resources.

Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a $600 billion U.S. infrastructure investment plan through 2028, and OpenAI has secured similarly sized contracts with Oracle; Anthropic’s own infrastructure spend is unclear but the pressure to optimize speed and power consumption is mounting.

Due to the global popularity of Anthropic’s Claude product, the firm introduced new usage‑frequency limits for Claude Code in July, capping weekly usage of Sonnet at 240‑480 hours and Opus 4 at 24‑40 hours depending on infrastructure load.

Patil brings over 20 years of software engineering experience, including five years at Stripe in senior technical roles, a stint as senior vice president of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and engineering positions at Amazon and Microsoft.

Amodei emphasized Patil’s extensive experience building reliable infrastructure for enterprises, stating that his addition will strengthen Claude’s position as a leading enterprise AI platform.

Patil expressed enthusiasm for joining Anthropic at a pivotal moment in AI’s rapid development, describing his work there as the most important mission he could undertake.
