Avoid These Four Provincial Capitals When Job Hunting as a Programmer

Programmers should beware of four provincial capitals—Zhengzhou, Jinan, Shijiazhuang, and Shenyang—where limited quality tech firms, low salaries, scarce R&D roles, and poor job stability can waste effort and jeopardize career growth in the long term.

Avoid These Four Provincial Capitals When Job Hunting as a Programmer

Programmers are warned to stay cautious about four provincial capital cities that may hinder long‑term career development; avoiding them can prevent wasted effort and potential setbacks.

First stop: Zhengzhou

In Zhengzhou's IT scene, only two companies are considered ideal: “Digital Horsepower,” a large outsourcing base within the Alibaba ecosystem that offers top salary and scale, and the headquarters of “Mixue Bingcheng,” which, although not purely tech‑driven, provides many information‑technology positions due to its listed status.

Excluding these two, the remaining job market is dominated by micro‑companies and low‑end outsourcing. Few positions pay over 10,000 CNY per month; many enforce single‑day or alternating‑weekend schedules as unwritten rules. Social security contributions are often at the minimum level, technical architectures are outdated, and work is limited to repetitive CRUD tasks with no growth potential.

Second stop: Jinan

Jinan presents a mixed picture. Its advantage lies in the presence of some Huawei R&D positions, offering a place for top talent, and the large‑scale Wave Group (around 10,000 employees), which, while offering average salaries, provides relatively stable employment.

However, the downside is severe: unlike Zhengzhou, Jinan lacks abundant outsourcing jobs; the overall job pool is tiny, limiting choices. Moreover, salaries are surprisingly lower than Zhengzhou's despite similar roles.

Third stop: Shijiazhuang

Shijiazhuang is even worse. It is hard to find any reputable tech companies. Most listings show monthly salaries of only a few thousand yuan, companies of 20‑99 employees, and offices hidden in residential buildings. For developers with career ambitions, the only advice is to head to Beijing instead of wasting time there.

Fourth stop: Shenyang

In Shenyang, job boards list R&D positions from Huawei, FAW, BMW, and the local giant Neusoft. Yet most postings have been inactive for three months to half a year, indicating very few truly hiring companies.

Therefore, those planning to return to Liaoning should be cautious: quitting and returning home to job‑search can lead to prolonged unemployment. The local salary purchasing power, jokingly called “Northeast currency,” is also poor.

Conclusion: programmers should carefully evaluate these four cities and consider avoiding them to prevent wasted effort and potential career setbacks.
