Baidu's Wenxin AI Agent Technology Wins Leading Science and Technology Award at 2024 World Internet Conference

At the 2024 World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, Baidu’s Wenxin AI Agent technology earned the Leading Science and Technology Award, marking its second consecutive win and highlighting the system’s brain‑inspired “System 2” architecture that enhances large‑model reasoning, accelerates diverse applications, and drives significant social and economic value.

From November 19 to 22, 2024, the World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit was held in Wuzhen, Zhejiang. On the afternoon of November 19, the 2024 World Internet Conference Leading Science and Technology Award was announced, with Baidu's Wenxin AI Agent technology winning the award. This follows last year's award for key technologies of the knowledge-enhanced large language model, marking the second consecutive year that Baidu's large model technology has received this honor. National Outstanding Engineer and Baidu CTO Wang Haifeng attended the award ceremony as the presenter.

At the event, Wang Haifeng said: 'Artificial intelligence technology represented by large models is leading the wave of scientific and technological innovation and industrial transformation, and AI agents are the current application direction that can best unleash the potential of large models. The breakthrough of Wenxin AI Agent technology has promoted a comprehensive improvement of the capabilities of the Wenxin large model, fully unleashing the potential of large models and accelerating the explosion of applications, such as code AI agents, farmer academician AI agents, and personal assistants. Large model and AI agent technologies will stimulate more innovation and bring tremendous value to social and economic development.'

As introduced, the Wenxin AI Agent technology was inspired by the human brain's fast and slow thinking, and System 2 was developed on top of the base large model, making it more rational and accurate. The core of System 2 is the thinking model, which through supervised fine-tuning of thinking processes, preference learning for behavior decisions, and reinforcement learning for outcome reflection, gains understanding, planning, reflection, and evolution capabilities, to a certain extent making the thinking process transparent, enabling machines to think and act like humans, autonomously complete complex tasks, and continuously learn and evolve in the environment.

The breakthrough of Wenxin AI Agent technology has brought positive impacts to large model technology and its applications. On one hand, AI agent technology expands the boundaries of large model capabilities, promoting a comprehensive improvement of the Wenxin large model's capabilities. Authoritative evaluations from IDC, Gartner, and the China Software Evaluation Center show that the Wenxin large model ranks among the top tier in China and internationally. On the other hand, AI agent technology further unleashes the potential of large models, accelerating the explosion of applications; as of now, the daily average call volume of the Wenxin large model exceeds 1.5 billion, and the user base of Wenxin Yiyan reaches 430 million. The Wenxin AI Agent has gathered over 800,000 developers and 150,000 enterprises.

Baidu's knowledge-enhanced large language model related technologies have previously won the National Technological Invention Second Prize, the Chinese Patent Gold Award, the Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Special Prize, and the China Electronic Society Technological Progress First Prize, among other major awards.

The World Internet Conference Leading Science and Technology Award is an international science and technology award for the internet field, upgraded from the World Internet Conference Leading Scientific and Technological Achievements Release event that has been successfully held for seven consecutive years. It aims to reward the most leading global internet scientific and technological achievements of the year and promote international exchange and cooperation in internet technology. This conference received a total of 270 scientific and technological achievements from 24 countries and regions; after expert review by the judging committee, 20 achievements were selected for the 2024 World Internet Conference Leading Science and Technology Award. Baidu's Wenxin AI Agent technology is the sixth time Baidu has received this honor at the World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit, following previous awards for Baidu Brain, DuerOS, Apollo, PaddlePaddle, and knowledge-enhanced large language model technologies.
