Baidu to Launch ChatGPT‑Style Conversational Search Bot in March

Baidu is set to introduce a ChatGPT‑like conversational AI chatbot integrated into its search service in March, aiming to regain market influence amid competition, while Chinese developers and startups also race to commercialise generative AI, prompting a notable rise in Baidu’s stock.

Baidu to Launch ChatGPT‑Style Conversational Search Bot in March

According to a Bloomberg report on January 30, a source revealed that Baidu plans to launch an AI chatbot service similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT in March, initially integrated into its search platform.

The tool will enable users to receive conversational search results, though a name has not yet been decided.

OpenAI released the ChatGPT model on November 30, 2022, a natural‑language processing system designed to mimic human‑like dialogue based on user prompts.

Baidu, alongside Alibaba, Tencent and ByteDance, dominates China’s internet landscape; after losing ground in mobile advertising, video and social media, Baidu is seeking to regain influence in the mobile era and is also developing autonomous‑driving technology.

In December, Baidu CEO Robin Li advocated for “ChatGPT parity” within the company, aiming for leadership in generative AI, while noting the challenge of commercialising the technology into products needed by everyone.

ChatGPT has captured the attention of Chinese developers, and numerous Chinese startups are researching generative‑AI models, securing funding from investors such as Sequoia Capital and Innovation Works.

Baidu’s public relations office declined to comment; following the report, Baidu’s Hong Kong‑listed shares rose more than 2% after previously falling 2.7%.
