Can OpenAI’s AI‑Powered Browser Threaten Google Chrome’s Dominance?

Can OpenAI’s AI‑Powered Browser Threaten Google Chrome’s Dominance?
OpenAI is preparing to release an AI‑powered web browser that could directly compete with Google Chrome.

The new browser will embed AI features such as a native chat interface similar to ChatGPT, allowing users to interact without manually clicking links. It may also incorporate OpenAI’s Operator agent, enabling the browser to perform tasks like restaurant reservations and complex form filling on behalf of the user.

According to StatCounter, Chrome currently holds over 30 billion users and more than two‑thirds of the global browser market, while Safari trails at 16 %. OpenAI hopes to leverage its AI expertise and the 400 million weekly active users of ChatGPT to pressure Google’s advertising revenue, which relies heavily on Chrome‑derived user data.

The upcoming browser is reportedly built on the open‑source Chromium project, the same foundation used by Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera. Its launch follows Perplexity AI’s release of a similar AI‑enhanced browser named Comet.

Key capabilities highlighted include a chat‑style assistant that can summarize pages, auto‑fill forms, book travel, and complete purchases without user clicks. The integration of the Operator AI, introduced earlier this year, aims to handle multi‑step web tasks, turning the browser into a fully functional AI assistant embedded within the browsing experience.

OpenAI also plans to release an open‑source model comparable to the o3‑mini “open weight” model, making it available on platforms like Hugging Face in addition to Microsoft Azure, potentially intensifying competition with Microsoft.

Google is responding with its own AI developments, such as Gemini 3, which is expected to launch soon to counter OpenAI’s offerings.
