CentOS 8 End of Life and Alternatives Overview

CentOS Linux 8 will reach its End of Life (EoL) on December 31, 2021. CentOS, originally built from Red Hat Enterprise Linux source code, was used by many enterprises as a stable, free alternative to RHEL.

Red Hat announced that CentOS will transition to a platform for DevOps developers called CentOS Stream , and there will be no CentOS 9 release. The planned release of CentOS Stream 9 has been delayed to mid‑November.

The final version of CentOS 8 will receive updates only until December 31, 2021, with Red Hat providing a limited support window until January 31, 2022. After that, no further updates will be issued. In contrast, CentOS 7 will continue receiving updates until June 30, 2024.

When critical security vulnerabilities with CVSS scores above 9 are discovered, the affected CentOS images will be removed from public mirrors and archived permanently on vault.centos.org , which stores EoL products.

CentOS is widely used by large enterprises and websites such as Facebook, Disney, GoDaddy, Toyota, Verizon, and by vendors like Juniper, F5, and Fortinet as a base for their products.

ZDNet recommends alternatives to CentOS 8, including AlmaLinux, CloudLinux OS, Rocky Linux, Amazon Linux, HPE ClearOS, Oracle Linux, Ubuntu, and of course Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
