CentOS End-of-Life: A Catalyst for China's OS Ecosystem Growth

CentOS's end-of-life announcement has sparked significant discussion in China's tech community, with experts viewing it as a catalyst for domestic OS development despite short-term challenges. The author, known as Feige, explains that CentOS's 90% market share in servers was built on its relationship with Red Hat's enterprise offerings, where CentOS served as a free downstream version of RHEL.

The strategic shift to CentOS Stream, which now sits upstream of RHEL, has disrupted this model. CentOS Stream now serves as a testing ground for new features and kernels, making it unsuitable for production environments. This change has prompted many organizations to reconsider their OS choices.

Tencent has been developing its own Linux distribution, TencentOS Server, since 2011. This OS has achieved 10 million installations by 2022 and offers full compatibility with CentOS while providing enhanced stability and optimization. TencentOS Server is available through Tencent Cloud and represents a mature alternative to CentOS.

For organizations concerned about migration risks, Tencent has developed an innovative "in-place migration" technology. This allows direct replacement of CentOS with TencentOS on existing hardware, including complete RPM package replacement, file change recording, and kernel swapping with immediate effect after reboot. This process is compared to F1 pit stops where tires are changed in seconds.

The author argues that while CentOS's end-of-life creates short-term pain, it ultimately benefits China's OS ecosystem by accelerating the adoption of domestic alternatives. This shift reduces dependency on foreign technology and strengthens China's technological sovereignty in critical infrastructure.
