China Unveils 504‑Qubit Superconducting Chip: A New Milestone in Quantum Computing
China’s Quantum Information and Physics Excellence Center has delivered a record‑breaking 504‑qubit superconducting quantum‑computing chip to GuoShan Quantum, aiming to validate a thousand‑qubit control system and boost performance to rival leading international platforms, while partnering with China Telecom to offer cloud‑based quantum services.
According to China Daily, the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Quantum Information and Quantum Physics Excellence Center has developed a 504‑qubit superconducting quantum‑computing chip, setting a new domestic record.
The chip, nicknamed “Xiao Hong”, was delivered in Hefei to GuoShan Quantum Technology Co., Ltd., which announced that it breaks the Chinese record for superconducting quantum‑chip qubit count.
GuoShan Quantum says the chip will be used to verify the company’s self‑developed thousand‑qubit measurement‑control system.
Associate Professor Liang Futian explained that the measurement‑control system and the quantum‑computing chip are core hardware of a quantum computer, and the control system will greatly affect overall performance.
He added that the chip’s qubit lifetime, gate fidelity, and circuit depth are expected to reach the performance level of major international cloud‑quantum platforms such as IBM.
Researcher Gong Ming emphasized that the chip’s main goal is to advance large‑scale quantum‑computing measurement‑control systems rather than to chase higher computational power or quantum supremacy.
The center also highlighted achievements such as the “Jiuzhang 2.0” photonic system detecting 113 photons and the “Zu Chongzhi 2.1” 66‑qubit programmable superconducting system developed in 2021, making China the only country to achieve quantum‑computing advantage via both photonic and superconducting routes.
Wang Zhen, deputy general manager of China Telecom Quantum Group, said the group will cooperate with GuoShan Quantum to develop a quantum computer based on the “Xiao Hong” chip, which will be accessible to global users through China Telecom’s quantum‑computing cloud platform.
He stated that this will enable users from various fields to efficiently study practical‑value problems and algorithms, accelerating the application of quantum computing in real‑world scenarios.
