Claude 3 Unveiled: Faster, More Accurate AI with File Upload Capability

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI staff including Daniela and Dario Amodei, announced the release of Claude 3, the third generation of its AI chatbot, claiming it surpasses OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini in proficiency, knowledge breadth, and reasoning.

Claude 3 is offered in three model tiers: Opus and Sonnet, which are already accessible via the Claude 3 website and developer API, and the soon‑to‑be‑released Haiku model, touted as the fastest of the trio.

According to Anthropic’s benchmarks, Opus outperforms GPT‑3.5, GPT‑4, and Gemini across key domains such as common‑sense reasoning, undergraduate‑level knowledge, graduate‑level expert reasoning, basic mathematics, problem‑solving, and code generation.

Anthropic emphasizes that Claude 3 approaches human‑level understanding and fluency on complex tasks, delivering response speeds up to twice as fast as Claude 2 and Claude 2.1. The upcoming Haiku model is expected to read dense research papers with charts and graphics in under three seconds.

Safety improvements are highlighted: Claude 3 better distinguishes harmful from harmless queries, reducing hallucinations and erroneous answers compared with earlier versions.

One of the most notable new features is file‑upload support. Developers can now submit images, PDFs, plain‑text files, Microsoft Office documents, CSVs, and HTML files, and Claude will analyze, summarize, and answer questions about the content.

Claude 3 is available at https://claude.ai/. The free tier uses the “Sonnet” model, while a $20‑per‑month “Claude Pro” plan grants access to the more advanced Opus model, priority access during peak times, and early feature releases.
