Codex’s New Reset Banking: Save Resets and Earn Extras by Inviting Friends

OpenAI announced a small but practical change to Codex: rate‑limit resets can now be banked for later use.

What changed

OpenAI said users wanted to use resets on their own schedule, so Codex will gradually support saving a reset and using it later. The first rollout covers Go, Plus, Pro, and Business users, each receiving one free reset.

The announcement uses “rolling out” and “starting,” indicating a phased release rather than an instant global rollout.

Additionally, for the next two weeks Plus and Pro users can invite up to three friends to try Codex. When an invited friend sends their first Codex message, both the inviter and the invitee receive an extra banked reset.

The product already includes an entry point: enter a friend’s email, send the invitation, and after the friend’s first message a reset is added to your bank.

Why this feature is useful

Codex usage often follows a pattern: occasional small edits do not consume much quota, but large refactoring, test additions, or CI troubleshooting can concentrate consumption.

In such scenarios developers prefer the reset to be available at the critical moment rather than being spent during idle periods.

For heavy Codex users, the scarcity is not the number of resets but their timing.

How the author plans to use it

The author recommends not using a reset immediately. Save it for substantial work such as framework migration, project cleanup, batch test updates, or handling multiple issues consecutively.

This does not increase Codex’s capability ceiling, but it turns a mechanical quota mechanism into a resource that can be planned.

In short, the update lets developers store a reset for later, gives Go, Plus, Pro, and Business users an initial free reset, and allows Plus and Pro users to earn extra resets by inviting friends, making Codex’s usage rhythm align better with real development workflows.
