Discover CutefishOS: A New Chinese‑Built Linux Desktop Experience

According to foreign media OMG!Ubuntu, CutefishOS (Chinese name 可爱鱼) is a Linux distribution led by Chinese developers and based on Ubuntu, positioned as a desktop operating system.

With growing enthusiasm from developers, modern and powerful Linux distributions continue to emerge, and CutefishOS adds a new member to the domestic lineup. It provides a desktop environment on Ubuntu and is well‑received in the overseas open‑source community.

CutefishOS aims to "make a better desktop operating system". To achieve this, developers use the KDE framework, Qt, and KDE Plasma 5 to build a new desktop environment called "CuteFishDE", drawing inspiration from Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE), MATE, and JingOS.

The official website describes it as a simple, beautiful, and practical desktop system that seeks to deliver a comfortable interface and excellent user experience, meeting various usage scenarios.

The Cutefish desktop has been released on ArchLinux and Manjaro; the latest version is 0.4, currently available only as a test and development download, while the everyday desktop environment is under active development.

The project has been translated into over 40 languages and is open‑source on GitHub, requiring about 20 GB of free disk space and at least 2 GB of RAM for installation.

Behind CutefishOS is Chongqing Cutefish Technology, founded in 2021, focusing on research and services for Linux desktop operating systems. The name reflects a love for beauty.

CutefishOS, as the core product, offers a modern‑styled, practical Linux desktop that can satisfy diverse usage needs.

Visually, CutefishOS resembles macOS, featuring a Dock, icon style, control center, and widgets influenced by macOS.

In terms of applications, CutefishOS pre‑installs a few KDE tools such as the Kate text editor, Spectacle screenshot utility, and Muon Package Manager, along with popular apps like Firefox, VLC, and MPV.

The system includes a global menu at the top, consolidating application functions for better integration and saving screen space.

Current versions already meet office needs, offering software such as WPS, NetEase Cloud Music, Sogou Input Method, cloud storage, and QQ Music.
