Discover DevOps Dao‑Fa‑Shu‑Qi 2.0: A Holistic Framework for Enterprise Delivery

Background

On August 18, 2017, at the main venue of DevOpsDays Shanghai, I delivered a talk titled “DevOps Dao‑Fa‑Shu‑Qi” that systematically presented my understanding of DevOps and proposed an enterprise‑grade, three‑dimensional implementation framework named with the culturally rich terms Dao, Fa, Shu, and Qi.

The audience response was enthusiastic, and many industry peers later engaged with me to explore DevOps strategies, practices, and tooling in depth.

Almost a year later, my work exposed me to numerous companies across different industries and their concrete implementation cases, prompting a re‑examination of the original framework.

Combining recent reflections with insights gained from a close encounter with Jez Humble, one of the fathers of continuous delivery, I refined and expanded the model, releasing the DevOps Dao‑Fa‑Shu‑Qi 2.0 version.

The main updates are:

Adjusted the semantic description of the framework within DevOps scenarios.

Enhanced the “Dao” component to include business value contribution and cultural aspects.

Integrated the “Fa” component with the three‑step DevOps workflow.

Linked the “Shu” component to the DevOps capability growth model.

Connected the “Qi” component with the supporting technical platform.

Sharing useful knowledge is valuable only when it drives change; feel free to disseminate this diagram widely and leave comments for further discussion.
