Dubai RTA to Launch Blockchain-Based Vehicle Lifecycle Management System by 2020

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority announced plans to introduce a blockchain-powered vehicle lifecycle management platform by 2020, aiming to provide transparent, immutable records from manufacturing to scrappage for all vehicles in Dubai and eventually the UAE, enhancing trust among manufacturers, regulators, insurers, and owners.

According to local media Arab Business Daily on February 27, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced plans to launch a blockchain-based vehicle lifecycle management system in 2020, which will provide customers with a complete history from the manufacturer to the scrap yard.

The blockchain project stems from Dubai's 10x initiative and will showcase transparent records of each vehicle at any point in its lifecycle. The initiative will initially cover all cars in Dubai before expanding to the entire United Arab Emirates.

Dubai's 10x was launched last year at the World Government Leaders Summit by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, whose website states its goal is to make disruptive innovation a core operating principle and integrate this approach across all its work.

RTA Chairman and Executive Director Mattar Al Tayer said the vehicle lifecycle management system will be the world’s first government platform capable of providing a vehicle’s full history.

The platform benefits many stakeholders—including manufacturers, dealers, regulators, insurance companies, buyers, sellers, and garages—by offering transparency and trust in vehicle transactions, preventing disputes, reducing service costs, and tracking ownership, sales, and accident histories to create a smarter, more efficient supply chain.

Arab Business reports that the project will involve strategic planning advisors, with future partners such as Dubai Customs, Dubai Police, Dubai Department of Economic Development, UAE Standards and Metrology Authority, Emirates Airline, and the Ministry of Interior.

The initiative aligns with Dubai’s goal to become the first blockchain government by 2020; last October Dubai announced the issuance of its own cryptocurrency, emCash, and hosted its first government‑backed training program for Ethereum blockchain developers in partnership with a Brooklyn‑based blockchain firm.

However, Dubai and the UAE also issued public warnings about the risks of initial coin offerings and the use of cryptocurrencies as legal payment methods due to their anonymity and potential misuse.
