Elon Musk’s VivaTech Talk: Neuralink, xAI, and the Future of Space Exploration

Elon Musk appeared virtually at France’s VivaTech conference, receiving star‑treatment from the audience and engaging in a Q&A that mixed sharp questions about Tesla with his own remarks on media coverage.

Neuralink

During the event Musk predicted that Neuralink would implant its first device in a human in 2023; the first implantation on a paralyzed patient, Noland Arbaugh, occurred in January. He described the technology as enabling “telepathy,” allowing users to control phones or computers with thoughts, and hinted at a future “blind‑sight” product for the visually impaired.

In practice, Arbaugh’s device lost about 85% of its physical connection to his brain and required retraining.

AI and xAI

Musk expressed skepticism toward large language models such as Google Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, questioning their honesty and accusing them of political correctness. He cited a controversial image generated by Gemini that depicted a founding father as Black.

He called for regulation of large models, noted that he founded xAI to avoid being a by‑stander, admitted that xAI still has a long way to match Google DeepMind or Microsoft OpenAI, but predicted it could become competitive by the end of the year.

Social Media

Musk warned parents about the dopamine‑maximizing algorithms of social media, urging them to limit their children’s screen time, and briefly mentioned his own social media platform.

Tesla, Tariffs, and Business Insider

When asked about low‑cost Tesla production and recent U.S. tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, Musk declined to answer, interrupting the interview and later stating he was surprised by the tariffs and generally opposed to them unless oil and gas received similar treatment.

He dismissed a Business Insider reporter as “not a serious publication” when the reporter pressed on Tesla’s sales and layoffs.

SpaceX and the Mars Mission

Musk reiterated SpaceX’s long‑term goal of making humanity a sustainable multi‑planet species, with initial targets of the Moon and Mars. He emphasized the fragility of consciousness and the need to preserve it beyond Earth, aiming to make interplanetary travel affordable for a large portion of humanity within the next seven to eight years.

NASA’s own timelines align with a potential crewed Mars mission in the 2030s.

Apocalypse

Musk warned that Earth could face a catastrophic event similar to the dinosaur extinction, and suggested that if humanity perishes, xAI should help us “die with a smile,” aiming to make AI the most entertaining companion.
