Positron: A VS Code‑Based Next‑Gen Data Science IDE

Posit, known for the RStudio IDE, has quietly launched Positron, a beta integrated development environment designed for R and Python that is available on macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Positron is built on the open‑source components of Microsoft Visual Studio Code, so its appearance and layout feel familiar to VS Code users, featuring panels, a console, a terminal, and an activity bar for file navigation, version control, debugging, and extensions.

Unlike VS Code, Positron works out of the box for R and Python without requiring additional extensions; the IDE includes built‑in support, though the underlying R and Python installations and, for Python, the IPykernel package must still be present on the system.

On first launch Positron automatically detects installed R and Python environments. Users can also install other VS Code extensions through the OpenVSX registry, as Posit is a major sponsor of OpenVSX, though not all extensions are available or regularly updated.

The IDE includes a built‑in data and variable browser with sorting, filtering, and spreadsheet‑like grid views, plus temporary summary statistics that complement code‑first data exploration.
