Fix Cursor Free VIP File‑Not‑Found Errors When Resetting Machine ID

Why the error occurs

After updating Cursor to a new version, the default installation directory changes from C:\Users\11437\AppData\Local\Programs\Cursor to C:\Program Files\cursor. Cursor Free VIP still expects the old path, so resetting the machine ID triggers a "file not found" error for workbench.desktop.main.js.

Solution overview

Uninstall Cursor and reinstall it to the directory that the error references (e.g., C:\Users\11437\AppData\Local\Programs\Cursor).

Copy the entire resources folder from the actual Cursor installation (e.g., C:\Program Files\cursor\resources) into the directory expected by Cursor Free VIP.

Change the default Cursor installation root in Cursor Free VIP’s settings to match the actual path.

Step 1 – Locate the Cursor installation folder

Open the toolbar in Cursor and copy the displayed path. The current installation path is:

C:\Program Files\cursor

Step 2 – Locate the Cursor Free VIP configuration folder

Enter 10⚙️ in the app to show the configuration. The config directory is: C:\Users\11437\Documents\.cursor-free-vip Make a backup copy of config.ini before editing.

Step 3 – Edit the configuration file

Open config.ini and modify the three path values cursor_path, update_yml_path and product_json_path. Only change the prefix part of the path; keep the trailing \resources\... segment unchanged.

Save the file and then close CursorFreeVIP_1.11.03_windows.exe. Re‑open the program with administrator rights.

Step 4 – Test the fix

Run the tool and choose option 1. When entering a phone number (option 2), change the default country code from +1 to +86 for China; the rest of the number can be typed directly (e.g., 183123456789 will be formatted as (183)123456789). Use a new phone number if the previous one is rejected.

Log out of the original account, then sign in again using the email verification code.
