Fix Cursor Free VIP Machine‑ID Reset Error by Correcting Installation Paths

Root cause

After updating Cursor to a new version, the default installation directory changes from C:\Users\<em>username</em>\AppData\Local\Programs\Cursor to C:\Program Files\cursor. Cursor Free VIP still expects the old path, so resetting the machine ID fails with a "file not found" error.

Possible solutions

Uninstall Cursor and reinstall it to the directory that the VIP tool expects (e.g., C:\Users\<em>username</em>\AppData\Local\Programs\Cursor).

Copy the entire resources folder from the new installation (e.g., C:\Program Files\cursor\resources) into the old location.

Change the default installation root used by Cursor Free VIP to point to the new path.

1. Locate the Cursor installation folder

Open the toolbar in Cursor and copy the displayed path. It should be something like:

C:\Program Files\cursor

2. Find the Cursor Free VIP configuration directory

Enter the command 10⚙️ in the tool to display the config path, which is typically: C:\Users\11437\Documents\.cursor-free-vip Make a backup copy of config.ini before editing.

3. Edit the configuration file

Open config.ini and modify the following three keys, changing only the leading part of the path while keeping the resources suffix unchanged:

4. Test the fix

Run Cursor Free VIP, choose option 1, then option 2. When entering a phone number, replace the default country code +1 with +86 for China, and input the full number (e.g., 183123456789) which will be formatted automatically. Log out of the original account, then sign in again using the email verification code.
