From VUCA to BANI: A New Framework for Understanding Complex Futures

We live in a VUCA world, a term coined in the 1980s to describe volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, but recent crises such as wars, food shortages, climate change, and the COVID‑19 pandemic have stretched the model beyond its usefulness.

In 2016, futurist Jamais Cascio introduced the BANI acronym—Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, Incomprehensible—to capture the heightened disorder of today’s environment, arguing that VUCA no longer adequately explains emerging scenarios.

Facing Future Scenarios with a New Perspective

The BANI framework offers a clearer, more concrete description of current realities, highlighting four dimensions:

Brittle : Systems that appear stable but are prone to sudden collapse, often due to profit‑maximizing practices that erode resilience, such as monoculture agriculture or resource‑curse economies.

Anxious : Heightened collective anxiety leading to indecision, passivity, and fear of missed opportunities, amplified by constant media alerts and misinformation.

Nonlinear : Cause‑and‑effect relationships become unpredictable; small decisions can produce outsized impacts, and outcomes may be delayed or disproportionate.

Incomprehensible : Information overload and the rise of “big data” paradoxically make it harder to discern signal from noise, rendering events seemingly illogical or meaningless.

Compared with VUCA, BANI provides a more accurate, concise vocabulary for decoding today’s rapid changes, suggesting practical responses: build resilience for brittle systems, cultivate empathy and mindfulness for anxiety, develop contextual adaptability for nonlinearity, and increase transparency and intuition for incomprehensibility.

While these insights describe reactions rather than solutions, they indicate that the challenges of the BANI era are addressable, marking a transition from the VUCA age to a new developmental stage.
