GitHub CEO Highlights the Growing Role of AI Tools like Copilot in Software Development

At the Collision conference, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke stated that AI and software development are inseparable and that every developer should have an AI co‑pilot to assist them.

He explained that AI tools will be integrated throughout the entire development lifecycle and projected that more than 80% of code will eventually be written with AI assistance, helping to democratize software development.

Copilot is especially beneficial for less‑experienced developers; surveys show developers initially accept fewer than 30% of code suggestions, rising to about 35% after six months, with a 50% acceptance rate seen as a significant milestone.

Dohmke highlighted competitive pressure, noting that companies monitor whether rivals adopt Copilot because it provides a competitive edge, and he sees no downside to using such tools.

GitHub Copilot remains the most popular AI‑based code completion service despite competition from AWS CodeWhisperer and Google’s Bard‑based tools, and GitHub shared recent survey results on Copilot usage.
