Google Gemini Adds Inline Editing for PDFs, Spreadsheets, Code in Chat

On October 30, Google's AI assistant Gemini received a major usability upgrade: users can now generate, preview, and directly edit files inside the chat interface without leaving the application.

The inline editing and preview capability covers a broad range of formats: PDF, Google Docs, Google Sheets, presentations, Markdown files, plain text, and various code files. PDF editing works on both web and mobile platforms, while the other formats are currently supported only on the web.

Earlier this year Gemini added file generation and download features; this update completes the generate-modify loop, making the workflow significantly smoother.

According to Google's official description, users can open documents full-screen for fine-grained editing. They can also select specific text within a file and ask Gemini questions or issue modification commands — for example, selecting a generated table and asking Gemini to convert it into a chart — which greatly improves daily office and content-creation efficiency.

Previously, file editing was possible through Gemini's integration in the Google Workspace suite (such as the Gemini sidebar in Google Docs). The new feature embeds editing directly into Gemini's standalone chat interface.

Competitor Anthropic introduced a similar capability earlier this year, allowing users to generate and edit documents and presentations inside Claude's chat window. As major AI assistants close this gap, the boundary of AI conversational office tools continues to expand.
