Google to Share Android Tech Stack with ChromeOS to Accelerate AI Features

Google announced that ChromeOS will adopt the Android technology stack, including the Bluetooth stack and Linux kernel, to improve development efficiency, enhance device compatibility, and speed up the integration of AI capabilities, though consumer rollout will take considerable time.

Google to Share Android Tech Stack with ChromeOS to Accelerate AI Features

Google recently disclosed in its blog that ChromeOS will more broadly share the same technology stack as Android.

An illustrative change is the migration from ChromeOS's own Bluetooth stack to Android's Fluoride, which has increased pairing speed, success rates, and reconnection reliability.

Google believes this shift will help phones and accessories work better with Chromebooks, since most peripherals are tested on Android rather than ChromeOS.

To continue delivering new Google AI features faster and at larger scale, we will adopt parts of the Android stack (such as the Android Linux kernel and Android framework) as part of the ChromeOS foundation. Integrating Android‑based technology into ChromeOS will enable us to accelerate AI innovation on ChromeOS, simplify engineering work, and help phones and accessories cooperate more seamlessly with Chromebooks.

This transition aims to improve development efficiency and device compatibility while accelerating the deployment of AI tools on the ChromeOS platform.

Google notes that although development work has begun, the updated ChromeOS will not be released to consumers for a considerable period; when ready, the company promises a seamless migration experience.

Last month, Google engineers showcased "ChromeOS running in an Android virtual machine" with a special build codenamed "ferrochrome" that runs smoothly on a Google Pixel 8.

The "ferrochrome" project was clarified as a proof‑of‑concept to demonstrate virtualization technology (AVF) rather than a forthcoming product.
