GOPS 2015 Shanghai: Operations 2.0 Insights and the Birth of the Open Operations Alliance

On October 31, 2015, the 2015 GOPS Global Operations Conference in Shanghai opened with the theme “Operations 2.0: Industry Thoughts and Debates.” Senior operations professionals gathered to discuss the current state and future of the industry.

Event Highlights

Photos captured attendees reviewing materials, groups of participants, book signings, and a lively audience of more than 800 people from across the country.

Open Operations Alliance Inauguration

The Open Operations Alliance was officially established to promote healthy and orderly development of the operations industry, with the Data Center Alliance (DCA) IT Operations Committee as its guiding body.

Dr. He Baohong, Vice Chairman of the Data Center Alliance, noted that in the Cloud Computing 2.0 era, competition is shifting from technology to operations services, making operations an integral part of cloud services and enterprise production systems.

The alliance, founded by industry experts and frontline practitioners, aims to share accumulated technology and experience to advance the operations field.

Conference Talks

Lean Operations for High‑Performance IT – Wang Jinyin ("Old Wang") presented a house‑shaped model with seven elements and eight best‑practice recommendations covering organization, policies, processes, and personnel.

APM: Business‑Level Operations Tool – Yang Jinquan from Tingyun highlighted how APM enables full‑cycle business operations monitoring, including user experience metrics, traffic changes, and real‑time application performance.

Human‑Centric Efficient Operations – Xiao Tianguo (Founder of Efficient Operations Community) emphasized that despite automation, the human factor remains critical; excessive automation can be as risky as letting a tractor driver fly a plane.

White‑Box Operations for Configuration Management and DevOps – Zhi Jin from Yunji Technology explained that configuration management drives change and must avoid becoming an automation bottleneck.

From Manual to Intelligent Operations – Liu Qitong, Operations Director of Tencent Games, described how Tencent BlueKing enables fewer than 300 ops staff to manage 50% of the nation’s games, showcasing intelligent systems powered by big data and predictive logic.

He stressed the need for an “emergency brake” in automation platforms to prevent dangerous operations from escalating.

Roundtable Discussion

The final session revisited the conference theme, with participants sharing major incidents, visions for Operations 2.0, and thoughts on the future of the profession.

Attendees agreed that Operations 2.0 should replace the industry’s chaotic growth with standardized best practices, white papers, and even formal standards, enabling small and medium enterprises to benefit from large‑scale operations and improving operators’ happiness.

How to Join the Open Operations Alliance?

The alliance, founded by senior operations experts including Liu Qitong (Tencent Games), Wang Jinyin (Lean Operations), Xiao Li (KVM), Xiao Tianguo (Efficient Operations), Zhi Jin (White‑Box Operations), and Zhu Guanyin (Baidu Big Data), has partnered with ACOUG and ACMUG for strategic cooperation.
