HarmonyOS 7: Window Breakpoints, On-Device AI, and Agentic Dev Tools Close the Loop

HarmonyOS 7 introduces window-breakpoint UI adaptation for triple-fold and wide-form devices, on-device Core Vision Kit APIs for 4× image super-resolution, text-to-image search, and face comparison, a lightweight ArkGraphics 3D engine, and DevEco CLI/Code agentic tooling that turns natural language into runnable apps with free GLM-5.1 on Ascend NPU.

HarmonyOS 7: Window Breakpoints, On-Device AI, and Agentic Dev Tools Close the Loop

HarmonyOS 7 Overview

Announced at Huawei Full Connect Conference 2026 (Sep 17–19), HarmonyOS 7 (version 26.0.0) connects three layers — experience, capabilities, and tools — into a closed loop for developers. The release targets the core pain point: writing one UI that works across proliferating device form factors such as the triple-fold Mate XT 2 and the wide-fold Pura X (1:1 outer, 16:10 inner).

1. New Form-Factor Adaptation: Breakpoints & Hover State

Instead of per-device layouts, HarmonyOS 7 uses window-width breakpoints . A photo browser example: single-screen portrait → 1-column grid + bottom tabs; triple-fold expanded → 3-column grid + side tabs; wide-fold inner landscape → three-pane master-detail-detail. Layout shifts automatically when the window crosses a breakpoint.

Hover-state adaptation handles folded postures without width change. Half-folded on a table: video playback moves content to the upper half, controls to the lower; video conference shows remote feed above, local preview below. The app senses the posture and rearranges UI automatically.

Parallel Vision EasyGo adds 1:2 / 2:1 launch ratios and scenario-specific routing (shopping, navigation) via config files, simplifying large-screen folding adaptation.

2. Core Vision Kit: On-Device AI for 2D Scenarios

Twenty-plus on-device AI capabilities are now exposed. Three highlighted:

Image Super-Resolution : Reconstructs low-res photos to 4× resolution using on-device model inference (not interpolation). Demo: old family photos, compressed WeChat images, merchant product photos enhanced locally — privacy stays on device.

Text-to-Image Search : Encodes image content into semantic vectors; matches natural-language queries (e.g., "sunset beach", "cyberpunk style warm tones") against local library. Returns confidence scores. No manual tagging needed; album never leaves device.

Face Comparison : Takes two PixelMap inputs, returns isSamePerson boolean + similarity score. Workflow: init faceComparator, build VisionInfo with two images, call compareFaces. Suited for identity verification, device migration, secure album access — sensitive face data processed locally.

3. ArkGraphics 3D: Lightweight 3D Scene Engine

Provides a complete 3D pipeline: model loading (.gltf/.glb), scene management, materials, animation, post-processing. Two modes:

Auto Scene : Load model; framework creates default camera, light, interaction controls. Good for product previews.

Custom Scene : Developer manages Scene, Camera, Light, Node trees, Material, Environment, Shader, animation state, and ToneMapping post-process.

4. DevEco CLI & DevEco Code: Agentic Development Loop

DevEco CLI (npm i -g @deveco/deveco-cli@stable) wraps ohpm, hvigor, hdc, emulator management into dozens of atomic commands. Ships HarmonyOS knowledge base and 70+ Skills. devecocli init --agent claude-code injects HarmonyOS Skills into Cursor, OpenCode, etc., and starts a local MCP server so the AI can invoke the HarmonyOS compiler for real-time syntax checks while writing ArkTS.

DevEco Code (IDE) integrates CLI. Flow for beginners: describe requirement in natural language → AI queries knowledge base → scaffolds project → writes ArkTS → compiles → pushes to real device → runs. New in 26.0.0 : one-click cert/signing, simulated touch/swipe/drag commands, ArkUI node-tree export for AI-driven UI analysis.

Cost control : Built-in GLM-5.1 free model runs on Ascend NPU (50 req/min, no monthly cap). Third-party models optional. DevEco Studio 26.0.0: code indexing +70%, build -40%, memory -30%, emulator startup 7× faster.
