How a Major Bank Accelerated Digital Transformation with a Unified DevOps Platform

In recent years, DevOps has become a buzzword in the tech industry, and improving R&D‑operations integration through DevOps is essential for enterprises’ digital transformation. The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and the China Communications Standards Association, as the official bodies for the DevOps maturity model, held the “2022 GOLF+IT New Governance Leadership Forum” in Beijing, announcing several assessment results. Bank of Communications was named a “2021 Leading Enterprise” at the forum.

The bank’s new pension fund module project, cross‑bank fund management project, and health‑care benefit project all passed the Level 3 DevOps continuous delivery assessment, while its audio‑video security project passed the Level 2 DevSecOps security development assessment, indicating that the bank’s DevOps capabilities have reached an advanced level. To support digital transformation and deepen the integration of finance and technology, the bank launched DevOps construction in 2019, focusing on building a unified engineering work platform to achieve development‑operations integration and improve product R&D efficiency.

By combining industry‑best DevOps practices with its own work, the bank has built an enterprise‑wide DevOps full‑process system and platform, integrating requirements, development, testing, and operations management into a unified and visualized workflow. This promotes deep business‑technology integration, enhances standardization and automation of product development, and provides faster, more efficient tools for reshaping business processes, constructing an open enterprise architecture, and strengthening technology leadership.

The DevOps standards and the standard‑based continuous delivery pipeline platform have dramatically increased software development efficiency. Taking the bank’s engineering work platform as an example, it serves as a unified DevOps workspace with an end‑to‑end continuous delivery pipeline at its core, linking all engineering activities, standardizing the entire delivery process, embedding quality standards, and enabling unified process management and monitoring. The platform now supports more than 200 major systems, with pipelines that integrate build and deployment. The full‑process support for development, testing, and production allows project teams to deliver products faster and more safely, improving R&D and operations efficiency.

Liu Lei, General Manager of the Software Development Center, was selected as “Annual Leading Figure” in the assessment. He stated that the bank always upholds technology as the primary productive force, continuously advances fintech reform, and actively pursues digital transformation. The next step is to further deepen DevOps optimization practices, enhance the group’s R&D capability, and empower high‑quality development with advanced financial technology.
