How a Major Power Grid Company Uses DevOps to Accelerate Digital Transformation

On May 21‑22, 2021, the 16th GOPS Global Operations Conference was held in Shenzhen, attracting experts from major enterprises such as Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Ping An Bank, Tencent, JD.com and Alibaba. Organized by the Cloud Computing Open Source Industry Alliance (OSCAR) and co‑hosted by the GreatOPS and OOPSA communities, the event is the largest domestic conference for operations professionals in internet, finance, and telecommunications.

The conference announced the latest batch of enterprise‑level DevOps empowerment (co‑promotion) plan partners, initiated by the Cloud Computing Open Source Industry Alliance and the Open Operations Alliance.

Interview with Jiang Wei, Deputy Director of Platform Security, Southern Power Grid Digital Grid Research Institute

Jiang Wei introduced his institute, a wholly‑owned subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid, founded in July 2019 with a registered capital of 2 billion CNY. The institute focuses on building a smart and digital power grid, driving high‑quality development, innovation, network security, and strategic implementation.

He explained that the enterprise‑level DevOps empowerment plan, guided by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, unites domestic and international companies and experts to promote organization‑wide DevOps capabilities, end‑to‑end continuous delivery pipelines, and higher efficiency and quality for IT supporting rapid business growth.

Southern Power Grid is actively pursuing digital transformation of the power grid. By joining the DevOps plan, the institute aims to leverage better technologies and platforms to further enhance its software engineering capabilities and elevate the digital transformation of the grid.

Jiang reported that the institute has already built a DevOps toolchain using mainstream open‑source frameworks, achieved initial CI/CD capabilities, and is gradually promoting agile development practices to improve the quality and efficiency of the power grid’s digital upgrade.

Looking ahead, the institute hopes to follow the industry standards released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology to continuously improve its DevOps maturity and better support rapid business development.

The previously admitted enterprises in the DevOps empowerment plan are listed in the accompanying images.
