How a Student Team Cut Aluminum Smelting Energy Use with Cloud‑Edge AI

01. Inspiration from a Simple Formula

Behind the basic equation E = U * I * t a graduate team from Beijing University of Science and Technology devised a method to reduce the massive electricity consumption of the aluminum electrolysis industry.

The team, led by Guo Tengyu, linked their academic research to real‑world plant needs, focusing on the voltage‑driven energy use and the anomalous "anode effect" that spikes voltage during electrolysis.

02. Cloud‑Edge Collaboration Powers Energy Savings

Using Huawei Cloud, the team built a three‑layer architecture (cloud‑edge‑device) for an intelligent energy‑monitoring management platform.

On the device side they created sensor nodes to capture key process parameters. Edge gateways aggregate the data and upload it to Huawei Cloud IoTDA, which stores it in the cloud database.

In the application layer, an AI model predicts the occurrence of the anode effect; the platform, deployed on Huawei Cloud ECS, automatically adjusts the electrolytic cell feed to suppress the effect, lowering voltage and overall power consumption.

Field tests showed that connecting the equipment to the cloud platform can save substantial energy costs and reduce maintenance expenses each year.

03. Young Developers Sail Toward a Sustainable Future

Guo Tengyu and his teammates migrated the system to Huawei Cloud, improving monitoring efficiency and cutting development costs, which helped them win the gold award in the China‑region student track of the Huawei Developer Competition.

The project has already been applied in an aluminum company and is expected to help the entire industry lower its carbon footprint, contributing to national carbon‑neutral goals.
