How AI Cut Chinese Essay Grading Time by Sixfold: A Real‑World Case Study

In Chinese language classes, essay grading traditionally requires teachers to spend two days per assignment, evaluating spelling, grammar, structure, theme and more, which leads to heavy workloads and delayed, generic feedback for students.

To address this, Xiamen Biganzi Education Technology developed an "Intelligent Essay Teaching Platform" that leverages Baidu's PaddlePaddle ecosystem and the Wenxin large model. The platform provides automated, personalized scoring, detailed comments, and systematic analysis of each composition.

The solution relies on several technical components:

PaddleOCR: Accurately recognizes printed and handwritten text from photos or scans, supporting multi‑language and handwriting detection, and converts the image into machine‑readable data.

Essay Knowledge Base: Over 400,000 student essays and more than 1 million teacher comments have been collected, anonymized, and vectorized using Wenxin's semantic‑vector capabilities, forming a searchable corpus linked to 54 writing‑technique rules.

Structure Analysis & Scoring: Natural‑language‑processing breaks the essay into characters, words, sentences and paragraphs, then compares each segment against the vector database. Scores are generated across 50+ dimensions such as structure, technique, theme and rhetoric, with customizable weight settings for teachers.

Wenxin‑Generated Feedback: Using the model’s dialogue‑completion ability, the system produces tailored comments, highlights strengths, suggests improvements, and even offers exemplar rewrites.

After deployment, teachers reported that a task that previously required about six hours of manual work can now be completed in under one hour, achieving at least a six‑fold increase in efficiency. Feedback is delivered on the same day, allowing students to revise their work promptly and stay motivated.

The platform has been adopted by more than 500 primary and secondary schools in provinces such as Fujian, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Hubei. It enables teachers to shift from repetitive correction to higher‑order instruction, while students receive personalized, timely guidance that fosters better writing skills.

These results align with the Chinese Ministry of Education’s call to use AI as a "golden key" for educational transformation, emphasizing data‑driven assessment, digital literacy and individualized teaching.
