In February 2021, the global "New Content New Interaction" video‑cloud innovation challenge, co‑hosted by Intel and Alibaba Cloud, attracted over 4,600 participants. Among the entries, a project from Qingdao University senior Wei Zijun focuses on improving safety for elderly people living alone.

Problem Background

With an aging population and increasing numbers of empty‑nest households, many seniors live alone, making them vulnerable to accidents. Traditional camera‑based monitoring requires constant human observation, which is impractical for busy families.

Solution Overview

Wei developed a health‑status monitoring system that leverages video‑cloud and AI. The system captures video via surveillance cameras, extracts human‑body key points, and uses the Intel OpenVINO toolkit to analyze posture. It distinguishes between standing and lying positions, measures lying duration, and triggers warnings when the duration exceeds a preset threshold.
