How Alibaba Cloud Accelerated IPv6 Adoption to Power AI-Driven Networks
At the 4th China IPv6 Innovation Development Conference, Alibaba Cloud showcased its rapid IPv6 deployment—boosting IDC traffic share from 12% to 40%, expanding cloud product support to 97%, and leveraging IPv6/SRv6 to meet AI large‑model network demands, while sharing best practices across industry and government partners.
On October 29, the 4th China IPv6 Innovation Development Conference was held in Beijing under the theme “Accumulating Strength, Smartly Starting a New Journey,” attended by more than 500 representatives from government, research institutions, enterprises and industry associations.
Alibaba Cloud reported that its internal coordination and traffic optimization raised IDC IPv6 traffic from 12% to 40% and increased cloud product IPv6 support from 71% to 97%, also boosting mobile and fixed‑line traffic for apps such as Alibaba Cloud Drive, Taobao and Tmall.
In response to the high‑performance and stability requirements of AI large‑model clusters, Alibaba Cloud leveraged IPv6/SRv6’s flexible addressing and extensibility to build “Predictable WAN” and “Predictable Data Center,” dramatically improving network performance and reliability for AI workloads.
Guided by the IPv6 expert committee and Zhejiang Provincial Cyberspace Administration, Alibaba Cloud co‑established the Zhejiang IPv6 Large‑Scale Deployment and Next‑Generation Internet Innovation Lab in 2022, focusing on IPv6, DNS and domain security, and achieving notable results in technology innovation, standards contribution and industry collaboration.
Vice President Liang Zhuo, head of Alibaba Cloud’s IPv6 work, highlighted that the company was ranked among the world’s top ten network research institutions in 2022 and is continuously building an open, collaborative network ecosystem for the AI era.
During the sub‑forum “Intelligent Connectivity and New Engine for Computing,” experts from Alibaba Cloud’s infrastructure, government‑enterprise, and Taobao groups shared their IPv6 innovations and deployments.
Senior Technical Expert Chen Fei presented “IPv6 Technology Innovation for Large‑Scale Intelligent Computing,” describing how Alibaba Cloud’s native IPv6 stack enabled scalable commercial deployment for massive AI clusters.
Technical Expert Zhu Xuefei discussed “Alibaba Private Cloud IPv6 Practice,” outlining key considerations and cost‑effective paths for enterprise IPv6 upgrades.
Taobao technical expert Xu Jie reviewed “Taobao IPv6 Practice 2.0: Focusing on Fixed‑Line Traffic Growth,” summarizing a decade of IPv6 evolution and strategies for increasing fixed‑line IPv6 traffic in large‑scale internet applications.
