Introducing Tianxun – Alibaba’s Intelligent Data‑Center Patrol Robot

Alibaba’s Zhangbei data center, covering nearly 100 acres and handling the core transactions of the 2017 Double 11 shopping festival, has deployed the world’s first high‑precision intelligent operations robot, Tianxun.

Tianxun continuously patrols the facility, collecting real‑time data on temperature, humidity, power parameters and the operational status of hundreds of thousands of servers. It can instantly locate faults, lock in the exact server position, and guide maintenance staff, reducing manual inspection work by about 30 % and potentially up to 60 % in the future.

The robot is equipped with a laser‑range‑finder, multiple sensors and panoramic cameras, and it navigates using a detailed data‑center map. Its chassis can rotate 360° on the spot to avoid collisions, allowing safe movement among dense racks.

Behind Tianxun is Alibaba’s AI brain “Tianji”, a suite of cloud‑based algorithms that perform massive data analysis, load balancing, and disaster‑recovery functions. Tianji monitors millions of data points across nearly a million servers, enabling second‑level fault detection and predictive maintenance, which improved fault‑detection speed by 20 × in 2016.

In addition to routine inspections, Tianxun can alert security when unauthorized personnel are detected, and it can communicate with on‑site staff via voice. Future upgrades aim to let the robot perform actions such as server restarts and hard‑disk replacements.
