How Alibaba Uses Blockchain to Give Every Imported Product a Unique Digital ID

Background

Alibaba's Tmall International launched a global traceability plan covering 63 countries, 3,700 product types and 14,500 overseas brands, using blockchain and other technologies to assign each imported item a unique digital identity.

Project Overview

The project aims to build a standardized global merchant and product archive, enable cross‑border quality‑inspection standards, and provide a transparent, tamper‑proof traceability platform.

Key Benefits

Standard Construction – Create a comprehensive global merchant and product standard database and scientific inspection standards via the EWTP framework.

Product Control – Integrate traceability with the supply‑chain middle platform to support data‑driven quality control from production to warehousing.

Authenticity Assurance – Consumers can scan a blockchain‑backed QR code to verify product information and authenticity, enhancing platform credibility.

Blockchain Technology

Blockchain provides an immutable, decentralized ledger using smart contracts and cryptographic algorithms, ensuring data integrity, transparency, and resistance to tampering.

Four main characteristics: decentralization, public transparency, stability, and consensus without third‑party reliance.

Three blockchain types are public, consortium, and private; the project adopts a consortium chain to allow external quality‑inspection agencies to join while maintaining controlled write permissions.

Technical Stack

The system consists of three layers:

Data Layer – Basic product, factory, and statistical models sourced from the product center and ODPS.

Business Layer – Decision engine, whitelist management, and rule‑based sampling for inspection.

Interaction Layer – Web services for product information entry and configuration, and HSF services for external integration.

Scanning Demonstration

During the Double‑11 event, products display a Tmall International anti‑counterfeit QR code. Scanning the code reveals detailed traceability data, including factory certification, customs information, inspection results, and QR‑code linkage.

Outlook

Supported by multiple governments, the initiative seeks to leverage blockchain’s immutability and traceability to improve product safety, enhance consumer trust, and promote transparent cross‑border trade.
