How China Pacific Insurance’s ‘Cat’ Automation Platform Powered a 3‑Level DevOps Delivery Assessment

On June 29, 2023, the 2023 DOIS DevOps International Summit & BizDevOps Enterprise Summit (Beijing) announced the latest batch of DevOps series standard assessment results released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).

China Pacific Insurance (Group) Co., Ltd. ("China Pacific") had four projects pass the CAICT "R&D Operations Integration (DevOps) Capability Maturity Model – Part 3: Continuous Delivery" Level 3 assessment, demonstrating leading domestic capabilities.

Platform Features and Development History

The "Cat" series automation testing platform, developed in‑house, includes six layered intelligent testing solutions:

KCAT (Cat King) : Unified quality management, scheduling, standardized testing processes, large‑scale data and result normalization.

BCAT (Black Cat) : Large‑scale functional regression testing.

WCAT (White Cat) : Code static analysis and scanning.

ICAT (Jie Cat) : API testing completed in seconds.

PCAT (Ben Cat) : Full‑link performance testing.

MCAT (Fei Cat) : Mobile testing to greatly improve app user experience.

The platform covers code scanning, functional, performance, interface, security, and user‑experience testing, and has earned more than 19 patents and 20+ industry awards.

Since its inception, the platform has been applied to over 400 project systems across the group, increasing automation coverage by four times and regression testing efficiency by three times.

Importance of End‑to‑End Integrated Testing for DevOps

In the insurance sector, projects are large‑scale, long‑duration, and highly regulated, requiring tight collaboration between development and quality assurance. An end‑to‑end testing platform breaks technical silos, shortens delivery cycles, and ensures high‑quality software releases, which is critical for successful DevOps adoption.

Challenges and Solutions During the Assessment

The assessment required the platform to provide comprehensive project collaboration, code management, pipeline, testing, deployment, and metric analysis across diverse systems, environments, and distributed teams. Iterative improvements were made to enhance integration, support multi‑system scenarios, and improve overall platform capabilities.

Future Plans for the Platform

While the platform already delivers strong efficiency gains, future work will focus on precise testing, demand‑gap analysis, accurate regression targeting, and visual code‑coverage metrics, aiming to combine precise testing with automation for smarter, higher‑quality software delivery.

Industry Adoption Statistics

Statistics (as of July 18 2023) show the number of enterprises in insurance, banking, and securities/funds/futures that have participated in DevOps capability maturity assessments, illustrating growing industry adoption.

DevOps Standard Overview

The "R&D Operations Integration (DevOps) Capability Maturity Model" series, led by CAICT with contributions from major internet, finance, and telecom companies, is the first comprehensive DevOps standard in China and has been recognized internationally, including ITU‑T endorsement.

It covers process (agile management, continuous delivery, technical operations), application design, security, system and tools, business value management, collaborative development and operations, continuous testing, and system reliability.
