How Generative AI Will Transform the Physical World – Alibaba Cloud 2024 Outlook

The open‑source ecosystem is booming: Qwen2 was released in June, quickly topping Hugging Face’s global model leaderboard, with nearly 50,000 native and derived models, ranking second worldwide, and over 10,000 models on Alibaba Cloud’s MagicDock community serving 6.9 million developers.

He emphasized that the true imagination of generative AI lies not in new mobile apps but in taking over the digital world and reshaping the physical world, creating value far beyond the connectivity gains of the mobile internet.

AI will permeate the digital realm, endowing physical objects with AI capabilities, leading to next‑generation AI‑enabled products and synergistic cloud‑AI ecosystems.

Generative AI introduces a unified language—tokens—that can represent text, code, images, video, audio, and even human thought, enabling models to understand and act upon real‑world tasks, from driving to robotics.

He highlighted breakthroughs in autonomous driving (end‑to‑end large‑model training surpassing traditional rule‑based systems) and robotics (future ubiquitous intelligent robots in factories, construction sites, homes, and emergency services).

AI‑driven computing is becoming the dominant paradigm: the industry is shifting from CPU‑centric to GPU‑centric AI compute, with over 50 % of new compute demand driven by AI, prompting massive investment in AI‑optimized infrastructure.

All industries now require stronger, larger, AI‑tailored infrastructure; Alibaba Cloud is expanding its AI infrastructure to a hundred‑thousand‑card network, redesigning chips, servers, networking, storage, cooling, power, and data centers for the AI era.
