How Huawei Leverages Open Source to Accelerate Cloud Transformation at OSCON 2017

From May 8 to 11, the 19th Open Source Convention (OSCON) was held in Austin, gathering developers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and innovators to share open‑source tools, technologies, and best practices. Huawei participated as an active contributor, presenting its leading open‑source technologies and commercial practices in IaaS, storage, containers, and DevOps to help customers accelerate digital transformation.

Huawei Cloud Platform chief architect Xiong Ying delivered a keynote titled “The Power of Open Source and Ecosystem,” discussing the prospects of China’s open‑source software market and sharing Huawei’s thoughts and commercial practices in the open‑source ecosystem. The Chinese market has been growing rapidly, showing a large market space, a surge in participants, and increased contributions. Huawei follows the principle “originating from open source, strengthening open source, giving back to open source,” contributing to the global community and driving ecosystem development through commercial practice.

To better support customers’ digital transformation and full‑cloud adoption, Huawei has deployed a comprehensive open‑source strategy across its cloud business, covering IaaS, PaaS, and cloud middleware. It offers a unified cloud architecture and API based on OpenStack, supporting public, private, and hybrid cloud deployments. The OpenSDS storage project provides a unified SDS architecture and standards, abstracting storage details, enabling resource pooling, eliminating fragmentation, and delivering storage‑as‑a‑service, allowing developers to write once for multiple scenarios. The iCAN (intelligent container network) solution connects northbound to various communities/applications and southbound to different data planes, letting developers choose implementations per scenario and greatly reducing the complexity of Cloud‑native application development. Huawei also supports developers in enhancing efficiency by integrating DevOps orchestration engines and container component standards into existing DevOps workflows.

Huawei possesses extensive ICT open‑source experience and collaborates with partners to build an open ecosystem, giving back innovations to the community and promoting open‑source‑based solutions. Since 2012, Huawei has built its own developer ecosystem, opened its ICT infrastructure capabilities, and established the Huawei Developer Community, offering open capabilities and solutions for 15 popular products such as cloud computing, big data, IoT, SDN, agile networking, and enterprise mobile security. Developers can leverage Huawei’s ICT open capabilities to create their own innovative solutions or applications. Huawei also promotes new ecosystem alliances like Apache CarbonData™, OpenSDS, and microservice frameworks.

Recently, Huawei’s open‑source project CarbonData graduated from the Apache Incubator to become an Apache Top‑Level Project (TLP). Huawei has established 13 OpenLabs worldwide and plans to open six more in 2017 in cities such as London and Paris. Through the OpenLab collaborative platform, Huawei aims to help enterprises across industries accelerate digital transformation and achieve commercial success.
