How Meituan Cloud Powers O2O Growth with Private & Public Cloud Solutions

Meituan Cloud, launched in 2012 to support its rapidly growing O2O businesses, began as a small internal team and has grown into a full‑scale public cloud platform.

Initially created to underpin services such as group buying, food delivery, travel and movie tickets, Meituan Cloud released a series of public cloud products in 2013 and became a notable player in China's public cloud market.

According to GM Li Shuang, the platform is divided into private cloud for internal business lines—providing merchants with backend systems for order entry, product updates, pricing, traffic monitoring and analytics—and public cloud offering industry‑specific solutions for catering, travel, transportation and hospitality.

Founder Wang Xing emphasizes that technology will drive the next phase of the internet, moving beyond simple online marketing to full‑scale industry digitization.

The platform enables merchants to input their information autonomously, with order verification handled by a mix of manual review and AI‑based image and data validation, reducing order processing time from days to minutes.

Big‑data applications and AI have significantly improved supply efficiency; in September 2015, Meituan processed 12,000 orders per day with an average of 100 orders per merchant and 70% of orders automatically approved.

Product planning is cautious: technologies are first validated internally before being offered externally, as seen with the recent release of RDS relational databases and message‑queue services.

Different business lines—catering, delivery, travel, movies—have distinct resource needs, so Meituan Cloud provides modular, combinable services such as compute, networking, load balancing, databases, caching, messaging and big‑data processing.

Pricing follows a “high quality, low price; high efficiency, low cost; high technology, low margin” principle, aiming to raise technological content and operational efficiency while keeping services affordable.
