In recent years, with socioeconomic development and consumption upgrade, China’s retail sector has continued to grow, reaching a total retail sales of consumer goods of nearly 9.8 trillion yuan in Q1 2019, a nominal increase of 8.3% year‑on‑year.

The 3rd China Digital Retail International Summit was held in Shenzhen on September 19‑20, themed “Digital Upgrade, Embrace Intelligence”. Suning Technology Group’s Big Data Center General Manager Sun Qian delivered a keynote on “Digital Empowerment of Smart Retail”, exploring Suning’s smart retail model and big‑data service capabilities.

Over the past 30 years, Suning has evolved from specialized retail to integrated chain retail and then to internet transformation, with each shift built on technological innovation. Digital technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, big data, AI and IoT now drive the retail industry’s new engine.

Suning’s technology team now exceeds 12,000 members, operating over 4,000 systems and offering more than 100,000 services. The big‑data team grew from a few dozen people to a thousand‑strong unit, reflecting the company’s broader digitalization journey.

The Suning Big Data Center aggregates petabyte‑scale data across the entire industry, providing a one‑stop support service for data processing chains, integrating an intelligent data platform, comprehensive analytics, and precise user insights for 600 million users.

Its service capabilities are summarized as a “big‑data technology tree”: the “root” is integrated big data, the “trunk” is the data middle‑platform, the “fruit” is data‑application products, the “left branch” is big‑data business, and the “right branch” is data‑process management standards.

Through this tree‑shaped ecosystem, Suning builds increasingly complete data tools and management platforms, supporting retail business across all scenarios from foundational platforms to application layers.

In the data middle‑platform, massive data is collected, computed, stored and processed with unified standards, forming a big‑data asset layer that offers efficient services to internal and external customers, reducing duplicate construction, avoiding siloed collaboration, and creating a differentiated competitive advantage.

Suning also implements a comprehensive, multi‑layered security protection system covering the data lifecycle—from collection, transmission, storage, processing, exchange to destruction—using classification, encryption, access control, and data‑masking to ensure compliance and safeguard data.
