How Tencent’s Open‑Source Strategy Shapes the Global Tech Community

Open source serves as a bridge for developers worldwide to share knowledge and tackle common challenges, and Tencent uses it to address broader societal problems.

At the Tencent 2020 Techo Park Developer Conference on December 19, Tencent Open Source Alliance chair Dan Zhihao announced three flagship open‑source projects—Cloudbase Framework for cloud‑native integrated deployment, SuperEdge for edge computing, and Tendis, a customized high‑performance KV database—alongside the first release of the “Tencent Open‑Source Ten‑Year Atlas.”

Over the past decade, Tencent has become one of the world’s largest corporate open‑source contributors, publishing more than 110 high‑quality projects on GitHub across cloud‑native, big data, AI, mobile, and web domains, attracting over 330,000 developers and stars, and consistently ranking in the global top ten.

In community participation, Tencent contributes deeply to dozens of renowned international projects, ranking first domestically in OpenJDK and KVM contributions, leading seven major open‑source releases, donating six projects to top foundations, and holding senior memberships in the Linux Foundation, Apache Foundation, CNCF, and many others.

During the COVID‑19 pandemic, Tencent was the sole Chinese founding member of the Linux Foundation’s Public Health Plan (LFPH), supporting global collaborative efforts against the crisis.

Tencent’s open‑source strategy follows a “dual‑loop” model. The internal loop promotes code sharing and collaborative development within the company to eliminate duplication, boost R&D efficiency, and cut operational costs, while nurturing projects that can later be released to the external community.

The external loop leverages products, communities, and commercial initiatives to generate social and commercial value, accelerate technology advancement, and improve development quality. By importing high‑quality external projects, Tencent continuously fuels internal innovation.

Historically, Tencent’s open‑source journey began in 2010 with the “Embrace Openness” strategy, evolving from internal code reuse to a combined internal‑external model. In 2015, the Tencent Open Source Alliance (TOSA) was founded, accelerating releases to 20 high‑quality projects within a year.

After the 2018 restructuring, the establishment of the Tencent Technical Committee and Open‑Source Management Office deepened collaborations with leading foundations. From 2018 to the present, Tencent donated six projects—including TARS, TSeer, Angel, TubeMQ, TencentOS Tiny, and TKEStack—to foundations such as the Linux Foundation, Apache Foundation, and OpenAtom. Notably, TARS became the first Chinese project to form its own Linux Foundation open‑source foundation, and Angel was the first Chinese AI platform to graduate from the LF AI Foundation.

Looking ahead, Tencent plans to deepen open collaboration across more than ten technology areas—including cloud computing, artificial intelligence, blockchain, 5G, and IoT—by establishing open‑source leader communities, labs, and initiatives such as the Code‑Summer open‑source programming camp, aiming to nurture the next generation of open‑source contributors.

Linux Foundation chair Jim Zemlin emphasized that “open source is a broad concept, a shared mindset for solving the world’s toughest problems.” VMware technology director and CNCF Harbor founder Zhang Haining noted that open‑source contributions extend beyond code to data sets, notes, and books. APISIX founder Wen Ming called for “heroes and influencers” to champion open‑source, encouraging more developers to adopt, use, and contribute to projects both domestically and globally.
