How Tencent’s WeTest Elevates Game Quality with Cloud‑Based Testing and AI Insights

In a highly competitive market, high‑quality games have become essential for survival, yet the industry has long lacked transparent, practical standards. Tencent’s WeTest, originally an internal testing tool, has evolved into a leading one‑stop testing service platform.

Following Tencent Games’ brand upgrade to “Spark More/Discover Unlimited Possibilities,” WeTest also refreshed its logo and launched an English website to deepen its international presence, aiming to push quality boundaries and enable games to carry greater positive value.

WeTest now provides compatibility adaptation, APM, and “Penguin Wind‑News” tools, serving partners such as Supercell, Riot Games, and WeChat, and participates in the DevOps standards committee.

Interview – GameLook

Q: Ten years of progress, not just testing – can you share the development journey?

A: We started a decade ago by upgrading the entire quality system. Early testing was low‑level and manual, but the need to handle many iterations forced us to adopt technology, leading to specialized testing for compatibility, server pressure, and security.

Initially serving internal games—from PC to web to mobile—we built tools for massive DAU products, addressing server pressure and client compatibility for hundreds of millions of users.

We operate WeTest as a market‑oriented unit within Tencent, applying a standardized quality rating based on product performance and market response.

Our goal is to integrate objective technical data with subjective design feedback, opening data and solving developers’ pain points to create better user experiences.

WeTest has become productized, moving beyond a single expert model to a platform that accumulates and transfers knowledge, empowering more products.

In 2015, WeTest opened to external users, aligning with Tencent Cloud’s strategy and supporting high‑quality distribution for Tencent’s App Store.

WeTest now handles testing for hundreds of internal projects annually, productizing experience through the Tencent Quality Open Platform to raise industry standards.

Q: How is WeTest positioned today?

A: WeTest embodies a “big quality” concept, not limited to testing. It acts as a user advocate, offering tools like APM for performance monitoring, which serve developers and operations teams to pinpoint bottlenecks.

Our “Penguin Wind‑News” aggregates feedback from app stores, forums, and overseas media, providing actionable insights for continuous optimization.

We also support overseas developers with AI‑driven game solutions, global performance monitoring, and multilingual sentiment analysis across 36 countries.

We are building a PaaS capability that lets large companies customize dedicated testing platforms while leveraging the same underlying technology.

Q: How does cloud testing address the long‑standing compatibility challenges in mobile gaming?

A: Traditional testing required dozens of physical devices, which was inefficient. By moving devices to the cloud, developers submit a package and receive automated testing, screenshots, videos, and issue reports, dramatically improving efficiency.

We have integrated AI to enhance coverage beyond simple scripts or Monkey testing.

Q: What are the big‑data plans for APM and Penguin Wind‑News?

A: We are redesigning APM architecture for global scalability and expanding Wind‑News to support multilingual analysis, aiming to build a worldwide sentiment monitoring system.

Q: Are there plans to establish industry standards?

A: Together with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other agencies, we are co‑creating a game‑quality standard to elevate market products, collaborating with entities like Zhongguancun Zhilian and the Signal Committee.

WeTest’s mission is to empower developers with standards, tools, and a quality‑centric ecosystem, fostering higher‑quality games and applications worldwide.
