How to Boost User Security Feeling in Financial Apps: Design Insights from Xiaomi Finance

Security Is Not the Same as Security Feeling

On January 10, 2017, Alipay faced a security‑risk controversy when a non‑password login allowed password reset by answering simple social questions, which eroded users' sense of safety despite the underlying technology being secure. This shows that good technology alone does not guarantee a feeling of security.

What Is Product Security Feeling?

When users lack understanding, fear and hesitation arise. As experience designers, we can strengthen users' sense of security through design that aligns with their mental models, conveys precise information, protects privacy, visualizes invisible processes, and pre‑emptively informs potential risks.

1. First Impression Matters

a. Secure Product Environment

Financial transactions make users especially cautious. Security presented by technology is often invisible; products must not only provide reliable protection but also make the invisible security atmosphere explicit. Designers should emphasize hidden security cues through details, creating an overall sense of safety rather than isolated “point” reminders.

For example, Xiaomi Finance displays a payment‑environment monitoring result at the top of the app, presenting the security status proactively and using psychological cues to alleviate anxiety and build trust.

b. Brand Endorsement

A strong brand solves trust and preference issues. When users know a product is backed by a reputable brand, their sense of security increases.

2. Effectively Protect User Privacy

In sensitive pages or core workflows, subtle design cues can reassure users that the operation is safe. Common examples in financial apps include gesture unlock mechanisms.

People instinctively cover their eyes when faced with danger. Similarly, Xiaomi Finance masks account balances on the home page, creating a safe atmosphere while still providing necessary information.

3. Visualize Invisible Processes

When users purchase financial products, they often wonder about fund status: why money is deducted but the purchase isn’t confirmed, why withdrawals are delayed, or when returns will be generated. Lack of visibility creates anxiety.

Providing timely feedback on operation status and forecasting upcoming events (e.g., estimated arrival of withdrawn funds) enhances controllability. Even when exceptions occur, immediate synchronization prevents panic and reinforces trust.

3. Inform Users of Potential Risks in Advance

After robust security measures, users still need to know that solutions exist if problems arise. Providing clear recovery options and guarantees (e.g., a deposit insurance fund offering up to 500,000 CNY protection) creates a psychological safety net.

Conclusion

Beyond solid security strategies and technologies, design plays a crucial role in conveying security to users. By expressing security policies appropriately and applying design techniques that alleviate doubts, products can cultivate a strong sense of safety and trust.
