How to Change Google Account Region: Official Process, Verification & Gemini Impact

I recently changed my Google account's associated region from China to California, USA, using Google's official application portal. After receiving the approval email, I verified the change on the page, and the associated region was updated.

What Is the Account Associated Region Used For?

Google's Privacy & Terms FAQ states it determines which Google company provides services, which terms of service apply, and local legal requirements. For example, the European Economic Area and Switzerland are served by Google Ireland Limited; other regions by Google LLC. Changing from China to the US doesn't necessarily change the service provider.

The region is not static: Google sets it at account creation based on location; after one year, it uses the country where you most frequently use Google services (most time spent in the past year). Frequent travel doesn't change it; moving countries may take about a year for automatic update. VPNs or cross-border work may cause a mismatch; the official application portal corrects this record. Check Your Current Account Associated Region

Viewing and changing uses the same portal:

Page title "Account Associated Region Change Request", domain policies.google.com. Log in to the target Google account. The page shows the email and "Your account is associated with the following region". If multiple accounts are logged in, use "Switch account" to confirm. Before application, it showed "China". Later verification uses the same spot. If the region is incorrect, submit a correction request.

Find "Which region should your account be associated with?" Open "Select a country/region". I chose "United States". Then "Select a state" appears; I chose "California". Target: United States · California. Choose based on actual situation; target region and reason must correspond.

Next: "Why should your account be associated with this region?" Select reason. I only checked:

I frequently use a virtual private network (VPN).

"I live here" and "I moved here within the past year" did not match my situation. This application was approved, but that doesn't guarantee other accounts with the same reason will be approved.

After Submission, Wait for Google's Processing Email

After verifying account, country/region, state, and reason, click "Submit". Page shows "Your request has been submitted", lists target "United States - California", and notes a completion email will be sent. At this point, the request is accepted but the region is not yet changed. If the page hangs or times out, check if the submission result appeared before retrying to avoid duplicate submissions.

Google does not provide a fixed processing timeframe in the submission result; I also don't treat my wait time as a benchmark for other accounts.

Receive Approval Email, Then Verify on Page

Email subject: "Your Google Support Request". Email states reviewed submitted info and changed country/region and state per application. Results listed:

Previously associated country/region: China.

Currently associated country/region and state: United States - California.

After receiving the email, I reopened the official portal, confirmed the same account was logged in. The page now shows "United States - California" under "Your account is associated with the following region". Note: this is the current associated region, not the target value in the application form.

Email and page match; change verified. If email not approved or page still shows original region, follow email instructions; cannot consider change effective yet.

After Region Change, Can Gemini Be Used?

After region change, I opened Gemini web version. The same account can log in and enter the chat interface. Entry:

Google's Gemini web support list includes United States; China mainland marked "Workspace only". Workspace is Google's office service for organizations; this label doesn't mean personal Gmail accounts are supported. Work/school accounts have separate eligibility and admin requirements. However, I didn't do a before/after access comparison, so cannot judge if region change affected Gemini access. Gemini's official login help lists geographic location, age, account type as factors; mobile app and web have separate support details. Therefore, if encountering Gemini region prompts, first verify account associated region accuracy, then cross-reference Gemini's support scope and account conditions. This portal corrects the associated region record; service availability must be confirmed on the service page.
