How to Craft a Killer Software Engineer Resume: 5 Proven Tips

These years I worked at Google as a software engineer (previously a team lead at Microsoft) and have reviewed hundreds of resumes, selecting candidates for interviews. Some stood out, others did not.

Friends and family often ask how to improve their resumes, so I gathered the most common problems I’ve seen and offer advice on how to avoid them:

1. Include technical details: programming languages, personal achievements, and skill level.

Do not list trivial tasks such as “completed the task on time.” Recruiters assume basic competence; focus on achievements that stand out.

3. Be truthful and quantitative.

Use measurable results, awards, press mentions, salary increases, etc., instead of vague self‑praise. For instance, replace “quickly built impressive software” with “improved software efficiency by 25% in three weeks.”

4. Highlight recognitions and special projects.

List honors, awards, or side projects with significant users. Example: “Technical lead of a flagship product that generated millions of dollars for the company.”

5. Never lie.

Falsifying responsibilities leads to immediate rejection.
