How to Write an Effective Technical Article: A Practical Guide

Background

Recently a teammate suggested discussing how to write an excellent technical article, so I wrote this piece based on my limited experience and understanding, hoping to share my thoughts on technical writing.

I hope the article sparks reflection and gains for readers, achieving its purpose. Writing a technical article is useful in three ways:

It helps share and promote technical solutions, gaining readers' recognition and appreciation.

It improves personal expression ability, enhancing the effectiveness and charm of technical sharing and presentations.

Organizing a technical article forces deeper thinking and analysis, expanding personal technical breadth and depth.

Below I will share the writing process I practice.

Writing Process

The process can be divided into three stages: preparation before writing, considerations and techniques during writing, and post‑writing improvement.

Polishing these stages should enable you to produce a satisfying technical article.

Before Writing

Getting started is often the hardest part, so thorough preparation helps you enter the writing state quickly and clarify the content.

Define the Intent and Title

The intent and title should be clarified first. Consider the purpose, keywords, audience scope, and key points of the content.

A clear, concise title acts as the article’s “front door” and can determine whether readers give it a chance.

Align with the content intent

Keep it short and clear

Identify the Target Audience

Understanding who will read the article influences tone and emphasis. Ask whether the piece is for a community, a leadership report, or a concrete implementation guide, and adjust language accordingly.

Appropriate address forms

What the audience cares about: process, result, or data?

Whether supplementary material is needed

Create a Tree‑Shaped Outline

After confirming intent and audience, draft a hierarchical outline (the “tree”). This also serves as a table of contents, making navigation easy for readers.

Gather Supporting Materials

Prepare the “ingredients” for the article: key concepts, code snippets, standards, case studies, and explanatory images.

Interactive Demo

Collecting and filtering materials encourages learning and reflection, allowing you to solidify experience and even discover new insights.

Adjust the Outline

The outline can be refined at any stage, similar to tweaking program parameters until the output is satisfactory.

During Writing

Follow the outline to write the main body. Writing ability develops over time, so focus on three aspects: basic writing skills, technical explanation techniques, and method extraction.

Basic Writing Skills

Key points include formatting, grammar, paragraph structure, logical coherence, and stylistic balance.

Technical Explanation Techniques

Make cold code understandable by using examples, emphasizing key points, employing images, and providing interactive demos.

Example Method: use everyday analogies (e.g., queue as a line at a bakery, stack as a game of “eagle catches chicks”).

Emphasis Method: allocate sufficient space, separate paragraphs, use sub‑headings, and apply visual cues such as bold, color, or background.

Image Method: diagrams (UML, flowcharts, entity‑relationship, etc.) can convey complex ideas more efficiently than text.

Interactive Method: dynamic animations or interactive diagrams let readers actively explore relationships.

Extracting Methodology

After the main content, summarize the insights into a broader, reusable methodology, but only if genuine conclusions emerge.

After Writing

Post‑writing work focuses on three areas.

Read Through and Find Errors

Proofread for typos, awkward sentences, and unclear expressions.

Fill Gaps and Polish

Delete redundancies, add missing explanations, and ensure proper citations for standards or external works.

Elevate the Intent

Link the technical article to larger contexts such as company strategy or frontier research to give it greater resonance.

Conclusion

Writing a good technical article boils down to “good technology + good writing.” The article shares my views on “writing well,” which are skills that can be refined, while the deeper insight (“the Dao”) requires personal cultivation.

How to “悟道” (attain the Dao) remains a personal journey; here are three personal suggestions:

Learn from Others: Stand on the shoulders of experts, borrow effective writing techniques, and keep what works. Think Independently: Reflect deeply and frequently; abundant thought prevents “lack of ideas when needed.” Persist Diligently: Build a solid foundation brick by brick through continuous effort.

Please feel free to point out any shortcomings; let’s improve together.
