ICDAR 2023 Competition on Detecting Tampered Text in Images (Jointly Organized by Alibaba Security)

ICDAR 2023 X Alibaba Security – Tampered Text Detection Challenge

This is a distinctive competition with generous rewards.

We built a proprietary dataset containing over 15,000 e‑commerce scene images.

Co‑organized by Alibaba Security together with Huazhong University of Science and Technology and South China University of Technology .

Prize pool of nearly 100,000 RMB with multiple prize tiers.

Conference Introduction

ICDAR is the premier international conference on document analysis and recognition, held biennially since 1991. The 2023 edition is the 17th conference, and the ICDAR 2023 Text‑Tampering Detection Competition will officially start in 2023.

Background

Text carries crucial information in many domains. With rapid advances in document analysis, preventing malicious text alteration has become increasingly important, yet detecting subtle tampering remains challenging due to weak traces and high similarity to surrounding text.

Task Description

Two tracks are provided:

Text Tampering Detection : Determine whether a given text image has been tampered with (binary classification).

Text Tampering Localization : In addition to detection, output the precise location of the tampered text.

We hope the dataset and tasks will stimulate research on image‑based text tampering detection.

Dataset

The TTI (Tampered Text in Images) dataset simulates e‑commerce scenarios and contains 19,000 text images, of which 15,994 have been tampered using various manual and automatic techniques. Each image is annotated with a binary mask indicating the tampered region.

Key Dates

Feb 15 2023: Competition starts, training and validation sets released.

Mar 15 2023: Test code submission (once per day per team).

Mar 20 2023: Test code submission deadline and technical report submission begins.

Mar 25 2023: Technical report submission deadline.

Mar 31 2023: Final rankings announced.

Prize Details

Track 1 (Detection): 1st ¥20,000, 2nd ¥5,000, 3rd ¥2,000.

Track 2 (Localization): 1st ¥40,000, 2nd ¥10,000, 3rd ¥5,000, 4th‑8th ¥1,000 each.

All finalists receive a premium gift, and other outstanding participants may receive additional prizes.
