IDC Report: Baidu Wenxin Large Model Leads AI Evaluation with 7 Full Scores

IDC's inaugural AI Large Model Technology Capability Assessment Report 2023 reveals Baidu's Wenxin (ERNIE) large model as the overall leader, achieving 7 out of 12 full scores across all evaluated dimensions. The comprehensive evaluation framework marks the industry's first systematic assessment of large language models.

Wenxin secured the sole full score in the algorithm model dimension, demonstrating Baidu's leading edge in core large model technologies. Since 2019, Baidu has been deeply invested in pre-training model research, launching its knowledge-enhanced Wenxin series models. The recently released Wenxin 3.5 version shows significant improvements in foundational models, knowledge enhancement, and retrieval augmentation technologies.

Multiple public benchmarks show that Wenxin 3.5-powered Wenxin Yiyan (ERNIE Bot) exhibits outstanding Chinese language capabilities, even surpassing GPT-4 in certain evaluations. Its comprehensive abilities exceed ChatGPT, positioning it far ahead of other large models.

Baidu's competitive advantages stem from three key factors: its four-layer technology stack (chips-framework-models-applications), the knowledge enhancement core feature, and a thriving large model ecosystem. The self-developed PaddlePaddle deep learning platform enables efficient training and inference, with协同 optimization delivering 50% model效果 improvement, 2x training speed increase, and 30x inference speed enhancement.

In industry applications, Wenxin has achieved the largest scale of industrial implementation in China, with 150,000 enterprises applying for access to ERNIE Bot. Baidu Smart Cloud, alongside over 400 ecosystem partners, has deployed solutions across more than 400 scenarios. The model has been applied in energy (State Grid power load prediction, drone-based transmission line inspection), finance, education, healthcare, and other sectors, with 11 industry-specific large models jointly released with enterprise partners.

As stated in the report, "All enterprises will become heavily dependent on large models, and all products will be developed based on large models." Baidu's ecosystem approach aims to transition large models from "usable" to "easy to use," driving broader AI adoption across industries.
