Inside the 4th DevOps System & Tools Standards Workshop: Key Insights and Outcomes

The fourth DevOps System and Tools Standards workshop held on March 8‑9, 2019 in Hangzhou gathered over 60 experts from leading Chinese tech and finance companies to collaboratively refine the DevOps standards framework across project management, continuous delivery, and testing domains, resulting in extensive revisions and consensus on the standards.

Meeting Summary

On March 8‑9, 2019, the TC608 Cloud Computing Standards and Open Source Promotion Committee, led by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, hosted the fourth DevOps System and Tools Standards workshop at Huawei's Hangzhou Research Institute. More than 60 DevOps practitioners from top enterprises such as Huawei, Tencent, Alibaba, Baidu, JD, major banks, and telecom operators participated to review and improve the standards.

Background

The DevOps System and Tools Standard is the eighth part of the DevOps capability maturity model, focusing on the specifications for DevOps systems and tools. Initiated in August 2018, the standard underwent months of online discussions and several offline workshops before reaching a comprehensive review stage.

Workshop Details

The intense two‑day workshop employed breakout sessions, during which experts discussed, edited, and merged 33 pull requests in real time.

1. Project Development & Management, Application Design & Development

Led by Huawei’s Xu Yi, participants from companies such as AsiaInfo, Shenzhou Taiyue, ONES, Bank of China, Guangdong Mobile, and others consolidated requirement, planning, and defect management into work item and plan management, clarifying team collaboration and metric definitions.

2. Continuous Delivery

Organized by Alibaba’s Dong Yue, experts from Alibaba, Tencent, Baidu, major banks, telecom operators, and other firms merged the build & continuous integration capabilities and separated deployment & release tools, reaching consensus on ten capability items.

3. Test Management & Automated Testing

Led by ZTE’s Ju Weigang, participants from Tencent, Bank of China, Alibaba, Huatai Securities, FirstAI, and others iterated the testing standards over three rounds, refining eight capability items with meticulous wording.

The workshop concluded with unanimous agreement among the experts to enhance and standardize the DevOps system and tools specifications.
